Bereavement and loss

The feelings of loss and despair when someone or something has been taken away or has left us is a very painful and isolating experience. The bereaved person will often feel totally abandoned and can be faced with sadness, change and a great sense of loss. We have to find ways of coping with all that bereavement brings, and with the challenge of finding a new sense of life and purpose.  All this takes time – almost always longer than we think.

Often bereaved people experience feelings of guilt, anger or bewilderment. They may want to either give or accept blame;  some undergo anxiety and disbelief. They may attempt to 'locate' the loved one or communicate with them. Counselling can help them reconstruct their lives as their grief diminishes.
