Assertiveness

Assertiveness is the art of clear, honest and direct communication. Assertiveness helps people dispense with the need for approval, helping them make their own decisions. It can help them evaluate their behaviour in the light of others' criticism, rather than denying it defensively.

It helps with feelings of self confidence, self respect and self worth, and confirms that people have the power to make choices and be their own person. It has nothing to do with bullying or gender stereotypes, it's a level-headed approach to living. It is designed to help people who feel they are too passive, too aggressive or too manipulative.

Skills incorporated into the counselling work include making clear, specific requests, learning how to say 'no', handling criticism, learning about body language, managing the expression of feelings, receiving compliments, taking the initiative, building self-esteem.
